Cervical Screening & Smear Tests in Dublin
Access free cervical screening through Ireland's CervicalCheck programme when you are eligible, or arrange a private smear test for €170 if you prefer private screening or are not currently due under the national programme.
Free CervicalCheck or a private smear test
The two options are different. CervicalCheck is Ireland's national cervical screening programme. Private smear testing is a separate paid service and does not become part of your CervicalCheck record.

Cervical screening is designed to identify your risk of developing cervical cancer. The CervicalCheck test looks for high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) in a sample taken from the cervix. It is not a diagnostic test for cervical cancer.

Cervical screening FAQ
Do I need a CervicalCheck invitation letter before I book?
No. If your screening is due or overdue, you can book with a registered clinic even if you have lost your letter or did not receive one.
Do I need to be registered as a CareBridge Medical patient?
No. You can choose a participating CervicalCheck clinic without being an existing patient of that clinic.
Who is eligible for free CervicalCheck screening?
Free cervical screening is generally offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 65. Your individual due date depends on age and previous screening history.
How often is CervicalCheck screening offered?
People aged 25 to 29 are usually screened every 3 years. People aged 30 to 65 are usually screened every 5 years. Some patients are advised to screen more often depending on previous results.
Is cervical screening a test for cervical cancer?
No. Cervical screening checks for high-risk HPV associated with a higher chance of developing abnormal cervical cell changes. It is a screening test rather than a diagnostic cancer test.
Can I have a private smear test if CervicalCheck says I am not due?
Yes. If you are not currently due but want cervical screening sooner, you can choose a private smear test. At CareBridge Medical, the private smear test fee is €170.
What if I have symptoms?
Cervical screening is not intended to investigate symptoms. If you have symptoms or a new concern, arrange a GP or medical assessment rather than waiting for routine screening.
Can I ask for extra time or support during the appointment?
Yes. If screening makes you anxious, you have experienced trauma, or you have accessibility needs, tell us when you book.
